IKEA is entering the SMART TV market

Yes you read that correctly, our beloved furniture maker from the days when we didn’t have money and we were all about DYI has announced that their TV storage units now come with build-in TVs – called Uppleva.

image

The LED backlit TVs will be available in 24 – 46 inches and will be build into the furniture together with a Blu-ray / DVD player and a 2.1 (2.1? really? what kind of surround sound is that?) surround sound setup.

The TVs are Full HD, SMART Vs that are Wifi ready and play DivX files which is something that all TVs should do.

One of their selling points is that all the cables are hidden to reduce the clutter, but at the same time the TV offers multiple USB and HDMI ports on the side – so luckily you can add all your other gadgets to it and bring back the cluttered cables Smile

Mind you as a student with no money, just moved out of home and your parents offered to buy you some furniture, why not have the TV build into it. Prices seem to be starting at around $1000 and it should be available later this year in selected European countries.

Will I buy one? probably not. I think IKEA needs to stick to what they are good at and that is furniture.

New Apple TV leaked (and yes we want one)

These leaked images of a full size 50 inch Apple Television (not the hockey puck but a full sized TV using gesture controls for the lounge) arrived in our inbox this morning. From what we can tell you will be able to install TV Channels in the same way you use apps on your iPhone.

You can click the images to see the full size pics.

Iain McDonald "Secures" a Spot on The Morning Show

Yeah, sorry about the title. Blame Paul Cotton for that.

Our own Iain Mac stopped by The Morning Show earlier this week to talk about password security on the internets.

Google TV has landed

Sony anounced today its new range of Internet TVs that are being powered by GoogleTV

image

It comes with a keyboard remote that has a querty keypad, a mouse pad and generally reminds me of a Playstation controller.

Engadget was able to go hands-on already so check out the video below:

I believe Internet TVs are the future and this seems to be a great step into the right direction.

Sony is hitting the ground running too as the new TVs will be available in the US from this weekend and will cost from USD399 (24”) to USD1399 (46”) – With the Aussie dollar being strong there might be a bargain in here

The Fish's Friday Five

Well, it’s the last Friday of the month and I thought I’d share what I think are the best and worst television commercials going around, for a bit of fun.

So, I give you ‘The Fish’s Friday Five‘. I encourage you to let me know what you think. Do you love any of these, hate them with a passion or have others you want to share?

Things Your Kids May Never Know About

Now that I am a dad I get drawn to different types of topics that never really interested me.

So I came across this one and it made me sad because it’s so true.

Being a geek myself I enjoyed reading about the “good old” days and i made it my mission to at least teach my child about all the great gadgets from the past.

here are my top 10 that i hope our children will remember because we tell them about it.

  1. Inserting a VHS tape into a VCR to watch a movie or to record something
  2. Sending that film away to be processed
  3. The scream of a modem connecting
  4. 5- and 3-inch floppies
    image
  5. Screens being just green (or orange) on black
  6. Phone books and Yellow Pages
  7. Waiting several minutes (or even hours!) to download something
  8. Putting film in your camera: 35mm may have some life still, but what about APS or disk?
  9. LEGO just being square blocks of various sizes, with the odd wheel, window or door
  10. Finding out information from an encyclopedia – times before Google and Bing

There are plenty more here

The ghost of Michael Jackson visits Meme school.

Millions of people have been drawn to this footage which shows a shadowy figure walk across the hallway in Neverland during the filming of Larry King live. Full screen and speakers up to get the best out of this version which reveals a new audible piece of evidence:
